Even More Tips of the Day from Facebook page

Strength training helps prevent age related muscle wasting, and increases metabolism since muscle tissue burns more calories per hour than fat tissue. Consider adding weight and core strength training routines 1-3 days per week to maintain muscle strength and promote healthy longevity.

Health Benefits: Cook potatoes or other root vegetables, then chill them for about 24 hours before you eat them. The cooling process turns high-glycemic vegetables into low- or moderate-glycemic vegetables, and that transformation helps keep your blood sugar levels more stable. Even if you reheat the veggies, this trick works. As a bonus, cooking with extra-virgin olive oil helps keep the veggies from slowing down your metabolism.

Make double batches of your favorite meals and freeze the 2nd batch.

Watch that phantom energy.
Unplug appliances that you aren't using. When possible plug them into a strip and turn the entire strip off.

Use your dishwasher and clothes washer for only full loads

I have done this before and need to get back in the practice. Some of my add ins were pecans and for Mondays I like to throw in a few chocolate chips to make Monday morning easier.

Switch to cash instead of debit or credit cards and you will notice your impulse buying will go down.

Place a peeled sliced potato in your pot if you have used to much salt or to much spice. Remove potato before serving.

Use conditioner or baby oil to shave your legs. Not only is it cheaper, but it is more moisturizing, so your legs wont be all dry and itchy after you finish shaving.

Most headaches are actually from being dehydrated. So drink your water.

In a pinch when hanging wallpaper if the sides or ends start to curl or peel back make a paste with baking soda and water. It will act like a glue.

Add a teaspoon of vinegar to a boiling pot of pasta and it won't boil over.
You won't taste the vinegar once cooked.

Use Dawn when cleaning your kitchen, back-splash or vent a hood or anything with grease. It really makes the job a lot easier.

Clear nail polish will help with chigger bites.

Apply nail polish to a pantyhose run to stop the run.

For bee stings - meat tenderizer or chewing tobacco.

Check out your local library not only for books but magazines and movies.
I live in a small town so I pay $25 a year so I can use the bigger city's library.

Get over any ideas you have about thrift stores or Goodwill. You can get some amazing bargains sometimes you have to really search thru racks but often it is worth it.

During the winter after using your oven leave the door cracked and let the heat escape into your kitchen. During the summer use your crock pot or outside grill as often as possible so not to heat up your house.

Use vinegar instead of Jet Dry, Fabric Softener and Windex. Hubby also uses it to clean his car windows with newspapers. You can pour a cup of vinegar in your toilet let sit overnight and barely scrub and it comes out very clean.

Some utility companies offer a break of you use your appliances at off peak times. Call yours to see if it would be worth washing your clothes at night and running the dishwasher.

Recycle plastic bags for taking lunches, small trash bags, and kitty litter.
Keep some in your trunk if you shop at stores that offer a discount for having your own bags.
I also put them on my hands like gloves for poop duty in the yard.

Have an adjustable thermostat and set it lower when you are away or sleeping.

Keep tires properly filled to help on gas mileage.

Pay bills online to save on stamps

Start an Excel spreadsheet for the bills.
If one doesn't come in you still know when it's due so it won't be late.

More Tips of the Day from Facebook page

Just a few uses for baking soda

An absorbent for moisture and odors e.g; an open box can be left in a refrigerator for this purpose. Also, sprinkle in cat litter box.
Wear as deodorant.
Use as a dry shampoo.
It is used as an antacid to treat acid indigestion and heartburn.
Aids in itch relief from poison ivy rashes.
Added to a bath or made into a paste it can be used to relieve the itching caused by chicken pox or sun burns.
A paste from baking soda can be very effective when used in cleaning and scrubbing.
Cleans brushes and combs to prevent residues.
Brush your teeth and notice they look brighter.

Don't use the toilet as an ashtray or wastebasket
Every time you flush a cigarette butt, facial tissue or other small bit of trash, five to seven gallons of water is wasted.

Empty toilet paper rolls are great for helping to organize loose wires, cords, headphones and more. Place dryer lint in them and use for firestarters.

Put the damp tea bags in a bowl and place it in the fridge for a few days. The tea bags will absorb any odors, and offer same effect as a box of baking soda.

To stretch my cat littler occasionally I will shred or rip old bills and place with the cat litter in the box. Newspaper works too.

Wash all your clothes in cold water and line dry as much as possible.

Don't confuse your path with your destination just because it's stormy now doesn't mean you aren't headed for sunshine.

Crock pot Tip: If you don't have a timer on your crock pot so that your food won't over cook, don't worry, there is a solution for that. Hop on over to a home improvement store and get a timer for your plug. They are around ten or fifteen dollars. You plug your crock pot into that, turn it on and then the timer will come on for when you set it. Most meats you can leave our for two hours without much problem especially if they are very cold in the frig. So you might leave the house at 8, the meal crock pot doesn't turn on until ten and cooks for the 8 hours allotted and is done at six when you walk in the door.

Tips of the Day from Facebook page

Electric bulbs get dirty just like everything else, and that
makes them less efficient. By simply dusting them with a
microfiber cloth, they'll give off 50% more light so your
rooms will be lighter and brighter.

“Never spend your money before you have earned it.” – Thomas Jefferson

Use vinyl place mats in your fridge. When it's time to clean the fridge just take the mats out and wipe down. Easier than taking the entire shelf out.

One way we reduce the dust in our house, which requires no
special or expensive equipment, is to take a standard 20x20
furnace filter, and place it on the back of a running box fan. The suction keeps the filter in place. Leave it running 24 hours a day. It substantially reduces the amount of dust in
the air. You will be able to see just how much when the
accumulation becomes visible on the filter. If you don't like
using disposable filters, reusable furnace filters are
available as well. Personally, I didn't like the reusable
filter we bought, and didn't think it did as good a job as the
disposable filters.
editor's note: This is a good idea, but it will shorten the
life of your fan motor. One way to reduce the stress on the
motor is to use a filter that's not as big as the fan. For
instance, use a 12" square filter on a 20" box fan.

National Volunteer Week April 21-27, 2013

National Volunteer Week April 21-27, 2013

I have been meaning to write a post about how easy it is to volunteer. Well, this is the perfect week since it's National Volunteer Week.

If you don't have a lot of time even as little as 15 minutes a week or a month will make you feel better about yourself and help a cause.

Since I am not a Rockefeller I like to volunteer by giving my time instead of money. When I was working full time outside the home I had $5 taken out of my check for a local charity but I still preferred to also donate time. Volunteering helps you feel good about yourself. It helps you remember no matter how bad you have it someone else has it worse. Such is the case with the saying "I was depressed that I had no shoes, until I met the man with no feet."
Volunteering also helps with depression or at least it has in my case. I am not the only one several case studies prove volunteering helps you feel good, increases self esteem, helps ease stress and depression.

So give me your excuses why you would like to volunteer but can't and I will say horsepucky.

I don't have the time.

Have you heard about Goodsearch?
Goodsearch is a simple way to make a difference -- each time you search the web (though Yahoo!-powered Goodsearch), shop online (at the 2,800+ stores on Goodshop) or dine out (at 10,000 Gooddining restaurants), we'll make a donation to your favorite cause. We know you have limited time and money and we've created our products to make giving back easy.
Goodsearch is a way to feel good--We all feel good when we do something to make the world better. Through using Goodsearch, you will feel great and feel celebrated each time you make a difference with your daily actions.*
Pick your favorite cause and every time you use Goodsearch your charity receives about a penny. So take Google out of your vocabulary and now use Goodsearch. Goodsearch has also come up with several other ways to make giving easy Goodshop, Gooddining, Goodgames, and Goodsurveys.

I don't have transportation.

In addition to adding Goodsearch in your vocabulary a lot of charities have online or virtual volunteering. One example is www.Pointerrescue.org They are a National English Pointer Rescue. I wanted to help but couldn't foster or adopt a dog at the time (I have since done both foster and adopt.) I have had several volunteer positions for them thru the years and they are headquartered 6 states from me. I currently help screen applications for possible adoptive Pointer parents. All you need is a computer and a phone. When you help place a dog in a good home and out of a shelter you can't help but feel good. Several of PointerRescue.Org positions are virtual since it is a National Charity.
I suggest going to www.volunteermatch.org and search for Virtual Opportunities.

Once you decided what you are most passionate about seniors, animals, children or the environment try and find a good match for volunteering. Like with anything the first charity you go with may not be a perfect fit but don't let that stop you from volunteering.
You may find you can volunteer locally once a month. My best advice is to start slow, research the charity, and don't put it off! Some charity out there needs you!

Today is Earth Day why not take a walk and pick up any litter you see on the way. :)

April is also Autism month.
No matter what your passion you can find someway to volunteer and help out your favorite cause.
